Gonococcal vaccines.

چکیده
The quest for a vaccine against Neisseria gonorrhoeae has been long, arduous, and, to date, unsuccessful. Indeed, some experts, citing the recurrent nature of gonococcal infections in some people, have believed the task to be impossible (2). However, there has been at least one human challenge study that has demonstrated protection against the homologous infecting organism after immunization with purified gonococcal pili (4). Furthermore, N. gonorrhoeae is quite antigenic for humans, local and systemic immune responses have been demonstrated against virtually every gonococcal antigen studied, and relative resistance to infection has been correlated with a history of previous infections (22).

Problems posed by potential gonococcal vaccines viewed from the vantage point of a control agency.
Progress in the characterisation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and other bacterial pathogens has suggested that immunoprophylaxis for gonorrhoea may be possible despite the well-known propensity for reinfection. Pili, outer membrane proteins, a capsular polysaccharide, and the lipopolysaccharide may be important gonococcal virulence factors, and immune components (probably antibodies) to more than o...
متن کاملA preliminary study of the prevalence of Gonococcal genital infection in 500 non – pregnant women referring to a private and public clinic in Kerman, Iran
To prevent the Gonococcal opthalmia neonatorum in many countries including Iran application of 1℅ tetracycline ophthalmic ointment is a common practice. To evaluate the prevalence of Gonococcal genital infection and the ophthalmic prophylaxis regimen we have tested specimens which were collected from the endocervix of 500 non – pregnant women attending a private and public gynecology clinic...
متن کاملExperimental Gonococcal Infection in Male Volunteers: Cumulative Experience with Neisseria gonorrhoeae Strains FA1090 and MS11mkC
Experimental infection of male volunteers with Neisseria gonorrhoeae is safe and reproduces the clinical features of naturally acquired gonococcal urethritis. Human inoculation studies have helped define the natural history of experimental infection with two well-characterized strains of N. gonorrhoeae, FA1090 and MS11mkC. The human model has proved useful for testing the importance of putative...

متن کاملVaccines for Gonorrhea: Can We Rise to the Challenge?
Immune responses to the gonococcus after natural infection ordinarily result in little immunity to reinfection, due to antigenic variation of the gonococcus, and redirection or suppression of immune responses. Brinton and colleagues demonstrated that parenteral immunization of male human volunteers with a purified pilus vaccine gave partial protection against infection by the homologous strain....
